Caroline County, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is set to start construction on a significant bridge replacement project on State Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard) next week. The construction will replace the existing superstructure of the bridge, which spans the Mattaponi River, as part of a $9.6 million investment aimed at enhancing safety and infrastructure in the area.

The construction activities are scheduled to commence on Monday, July 21, 2025, with the road closure for the Route 207 northbound bridge expected to take place late next month in August. During this period, the northbound bridge will be completely closed for approximately nine months, necessitating traffic diversions.

During the closure, an estimated 12,000 vehicles that typically use Route 207 each day will be rerouted. Northbound traffic will be diverted to the southbound bridge, which will maintain one travel lane open for each direction. Additionally, the speed limit will be temporarily reduced in the vicinity of the work zone from 60 mph to 45 mph to ensure the safety of both the construction crew and the motorists.

To keep drivers informed, message boards will be installed ahead of the closure to alert them of the upcoming work and the necessary detours. Work zone speed limit signs will also be set up prior to the project commencement, and these will be unveiled when construction begins.

The comprehensive nature of this bridge replacement project includes the replacement of steel-plate girders, a concrete deck, railing, and the bridge approaches. Moreover, essential repairs will be conducted on the substructure of the bridge, enhancing its overall integrity and longevity. With the completion of the project anticipated in April 2026, VDOT is optimistic that the upgraded bridge will serve the community effectively for years to come.

This initiative comes as part of VDOT’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure across Virginia. The maintenance and upgrading of critical transport routes are essential for accommodating both current traffic demands and future growth in the region. The presence of reliable and safe roads is crucial for the economic and social well-being of communities.

The construction will be managed by Kokosing Construction Co. Inc., the contracted firm responsible for delivering this project on time and within budget. Their expertise in handling such large-scale projects will be vital in minimizing disruption while ensuring quality work throughout the construction period.

As the project progresses, VDOT encourages all drivers to exercise caution in the construction zone, allowing extra travel time and remaining aware of changing traffic patterns. With effective planning and communication, the Department aims to ensure that residents and commuters are not unduly impacted during this critical infrastructure upgrade.
