Pocatello, Idaho – Nnamdi Moeteke, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Community and Public Health at Idaho State University, has transitioned from a medical career in Nigeria to a role in public health education in the United States. With more than a decade of experience in clinical practice, community medicine, and global health research, Moeteke is dedicated to enhancing health education and resources in his new role.

Moeteke’s journey began in Nigeria, where he graduated from the University of Nigeria with a medical degree. Although he originally aspired to be a lawyer, an early interest in science led him to pursue a career in medicine. His education profoundly shaped his beliefs, awakening a passion for making a broad impact on health beyond individual patient care.

During his National Youth Service Corps in 2014, Moeteke served as a medical officer in a rural area in Nigeria’s Isin LGA, Kwara State, where he implemented various health and development projects. His dedication was recognized with a state award, highlighting his commitment to community health. This experience solidified his decision to transition to public health, where he could address health issues on a larger scale.

Throughout his career, Moeteke has trained medical students in public health and community medicine at Delta State University Teaching Hospital and developed a residency program in community medicine. In 2023, he was hired by Idaho State University to lead the Idaho Collaborative for Infectious Disease Prevention, a CDC-funded initiative aimed at enhancing the state’s workforce response to infectious disease challenges.

At Idaho State University, Moeteke has made significant contributions by developing an interdisciplinary curriculum and creating ten online modules tailored for students and healthcare practitioners. His role also involves teaching and advising Master of Public Health (MPH) students, fostering the next generation of public health professionals.

In addition to his work in academia, Moeteke co-founded Medix Frontiers, a non-profit organization that delivers free health services to rural communities in Nigeria, focusing on HIV prevention and education. This initiative has mobilized over 800 volunteers, providing healthcare to tens of thousands of individuals in Enugu State. Moeteke has been involved in significant public health efforts responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria, where he faced challenges, including resource scarcity, misinformation, and the emotional toll on health workers.

Despite the challenges presented by Nigeria’s healthcare system, Moeteke sought opportunities for growth and broader impact abroad. He was awarded the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship to study Public Health at the University of Liverpool, an opportunity he pursued after encouragement from a classmate. Subsequently, he became a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Medical School, where he focused on primary healthcare and universal health coverage.

Transitioning to life in Idaho has not been without its challenges, particularly adjusting to the winter climate and differing communication styles compared to Nigeria. Nevertheless, Moeteke has been recognized for his significant contributions to public health, receiving various accolades, including the Commonwealth Scholarship and the National Institute of Professional Engineers and Scientists Award.

Health equity is a key tenet for Moeteke, who views access to the highest level of health as a fundamental human right. He believes that fighting for health equity is essential to his work, which is guided by a philosophy of integrating his Christian faith with his professional responsibilities to serve others and promote community and individual development.

Moeteke’s educational interests reflect disparities in public health training between Nigeria and the United States, particularly regarding funding, data-driven approaches, and the incorporation of practical experience in educational programs. As he continues to teach and develop public health initiatives in the U.S., his goal remains to foster a healthier, more equitable world.
