Vestavia Hills – The Vestavia Hills City Council has approved the hiring of Doster Construction for a series of construction projects valued at over $30 million at the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex. City officials expect significant development to occur within Liberty Park over the next two to three years, as outlined by City Manager Jeff Downes.
The primary facilities planned for the complex expansion include a new satellite library located along Sweeney Hollow Road, a dedicated police operations building, and a public works and park maintenance building. This initiative aims to enhance community resources and infrastructure in the rapidly growing area.
In addition to these main facilities, the projects will also encompass several renovations and constructions. These include the renovation and expansion of Fire Station No. 4, the demolition of the existing park maintenance building at the Liberty Park softball fields, and the reconfiguration of the back entrance to the softball park. Furthermore, an access road will be constructed to improve access to the new library, police, and park maintenance buildings.
As part of their contract, Doster Construction will also supervise the installation of a pool heater at the Vestavia Hills Aquatic Complex located at Wald Park. This enhancement is expected to improve the recreational experience for residents and visitors alike.
The construction projects will be strategically staggered to help manage expenditures effectively. Work on the fire station expansion, pool heater, and access road is set to commence in fiscal 2026. In contrast, the development of the police facility, satellite library, maintenance building, and new softball field entrance are planned to begin in fiscal 2027.
Doster Construction was selected from a competitive pool of six companies, with their contract entailing a fee of 1.75% of the overall construction costs, which is projected at $535,000. Moreover, Doster will receive a minimum monthly payment of $15,512 during the pre-construction phase, alongside billing rates for supervisory staff.
Mayor Ashley Curry expressed confidence in Doster Construction’s competitive pricing and praised the quality of personnel assigned to the project, indicating that the city is on track to enhance its athletic and community facilities significantly.
In addition to the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex projects, Vestavia Hills is also working on improving pedestrian safety and access with a separate initiative for a pedestrian bridge over Highway 31. This project, which aims to connect Wald Park and the city’s public library, has a budget of approximately $3.2 million, with the Alabama Department of Transportation covering 80% of the costs. This development highlights the city’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and safety for its residents.
Meanwhile, ongoing works on Massey Road are facing delays due to the discovery of an unmarked water main. This project consists of installing a 5-foot-wide sidewalk and repaving the road, with completion anticipated in the summer.
These initiatives reflect Vestavia Hills’ dedication to improving community infrastructure and facilities, ensuring that residents have access to essential services and recreational spaces for years to come.
