Two Murders Reported

On Friday, August 29, a 54-year-old man named Denny Garrett was assaulted in the Broadway Slavic Village neighborhood. He was attacked in the 5500 block of Mound Ave. and succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at MetroHealth Medical Center.

Just two days later, on Sunday, August 31, a second murder occurred in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Mujahid Abdur-Rahman, 39, was fatally shot while working on a vehicle on E. 132nd Street. Abdur-Rahman was taken to University Hospitals where he was pronounced dead. The assailants, described as two unknown men, fled the scene following the shooting, and no detailed descriptions are available at this time.

Police Shootout in East Cleveland

In a separate incident in East Cleveland, police responded to a family dispute late Thursday night, which escalated into a series of violent events leading to multiple injuries and fatalities. Aaron L. Sharp, 24, has been identified as a suspect in the shootouts that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left two police officers wounded.

Sharp was arrested on Friday morning after a protracted manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies, which included the deployment of drones and establishing a perimeter for safety. The suspect was located “hiding” in an area near the shooting scene and was apprehended around 8:30 a.m.

Details of the Shootout

During the initial incident at approximately 11 p.m. on Thursday, police officer Joshua Durda was shot in the leg while responding to the domestic dispute. He underwent surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and is currently recovering. Another officer, Brandon Hernandez, was shot while responding to a separate alert and has since been discharged from the hospital.

Tragically, two victims were found inside the home where the dispute escalated: Sharp’s 22-year-old brother Erik Sharp and their 82-year-old grandfather Charles Roscoe. Both individuals did not survive the gunfire. Sharp now faces serious charges, including aggravated murder and felonious assault, and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday morning.
