William “Bill” Hartstein, a devoted family man and respected educator, passed away peacefully in September 2025 at the age of 87. Born on September 11, 1937, in Geneva, Switzerland, Hartstein immigrated to the United States as an infant in 1939, where he spent his formative years in Akron, Ohio, and Regina, Saskatchewan.

Hartstein graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in accounting and later became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He used his expertise to educate others, teaching the Becker CPA Review course for many years. His commitment to education and the accounting profession made a lasting impact on many aspiring professionals.

A dedicated leader within his community, Hartstein served in various capacities at multiple synagogues, including the Taylor Road Synagogue, Warrensville Center Synagogue, and Cedar Sinai Synagogue, where he frequently took on the responsibilities of treasurer. His dedication extended beyond his faith, as he was an active member of the Owatonna Knights of Pythias and the Jewish War Veterans, exemplifying his service to both community and country.

Hartstein was married to Phyllis Weiss for 60 years until her death in 2019. Their love story was special, as they shared a birthday a year apart. He is survived by their son Jonathan (Agnes) Hartstein and daughter-in-law Debbie Hartstein, along with grandchildren Andrew Hartstein, Gabrielle Hartstein, Aleeza (Elisha) Gerson, Ariella Hartstein, and Chana Orli Hartstein, and great-granddaughter Moriah Zahava Gerson. He is additionally survived by his brother Hank (Judy) Hartstein, sister-in-law Adina Liberles, brothers-in-law Avi (Debbie) Weiss and Norm Resnik, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friend Ina White.

Bill Hartstein’s life was marked by integrity, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family, faith, and community. He leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered fondly by those who knew him and those whose lives he influenced through his work and community involvement.

The funeral service for William Hartstein is scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2025, at 10 AM at Berkowitz Kumin and Bookatz Memorial Chapel. Following the service, interment will take place at Mount Olive Cemetery in Solon, Ohio. The family is observing shiva at 2170 Fenway Drive, Beachwood, Ohio, through Tuesday afternoon and then continuing in Columbus, Ohio.

The davening schedule for the shiva house in Cleveland has been established, and the family will observe shiva in Columbus on Tuesday, September 9, from 7:30 PM to 9 PM, providing an opportunity for friends and family to pay their respects. Bill Hartstein will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his profound impact on those around him, and he will be deeply missed by all.
