Cleveland Police Investigate Weekend Shootings in Entertainment District

Police presence in Cleveland's Entertainment District at night

News Summary

Cleveland police are investigating two shootings that occurred early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old man and the injury of a 24-year-old. The incidents stemmed from arguments and have raised safety concerns in the city’s Entertainment District. Local leaders are calling for increased police presence to ensure community safety following these violent events.

Cleveland Police are currently investigating a shooting that took place early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old man and leaving another man injured. The incident occurred around 2:33 a.m. in the 1000 block of West 11th Street, in the city’s Entertainment District.

Officers on foot patrol in the area heard gunfire nearby as bar closures took place. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered the 19-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene by Cleveland EMS. A second victim, a 24-year-old man, was also found nearby with a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Investigators revealed that the shooting stemmed from an argument between the two men, which escalated into gunfire. The 24-year-old man has since been arrested and is considered a suspect in the shooting. He is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital, and the ongoing investigation is anticipated to provide additional details in the coming days.

This incident follows a recent mass shooting on September 7 that occurred in the same area, where six people were shot, raising concerns about safety in the Flats district.

In a separate early morning incident on the same day, Cleveland Police reported that a 15-year-old boy, Aniaz Paradiso, was shot and killed. Shadowing the earlier shooting, the police noted that an argument and fight among a group of individuals near West 130th Street and Lorain Avenue led to the tragic incident. Officers found Paradiso with a gunshot wound, and Cleveland EMS pronounced him dead at the scene. Aniaz Paradiso was a student at Valley Forge Patriot High School, and school officials described him as magnetic and adventurous.

Additionally, an 18-year-old man believed to be involved in the shooting of Paradiso has been apprehended and is currently held at the Cuyahoga County Jail. Prior to the shooting, reports indicated that the individuals involved had attended a party at an Airbnb in the vicinity.

Local residents have voiced their concerns regarding the impact of repeated shootings on businesses in the Flats area. In light of these events, Councilman Michael Polensek has emphasized the urgent need for an increased police presence to ensure the safety of the community. He attributed the recent violence to outside influences rather than patrons of local bars and restaurants, and has called for stricter law enforcement measures to reclaim the streets of the Flats.

The ongoing investigations into both shooting incidents signal the city’s commitment to addressing violence and ensuring public safety in the wake of such tragic events.
