Dr. John E. Bush, a revered educator and activist, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on September 25, 2025, in Cleveland, Ohio. Renowned for his trailblazing contributions to education and civil rights, Dr. Bush’s legacy will be remembered by students, colleagues, and friends.

Born on December 8, 1927, in Wellsville, Ohio, Dr. Bush attended Wellsville Public Schools and graduated from high school in 1946. After briefly attending Virginia Union University, he completed his undergraduate education at Delaware State College, graduating in 1950. His academic journey continued after being drafted into the Army in October 1950, where he served until 1952. Following his military service, Dr. Bush relocated to New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he lived with his partner Wilbur Chambers at Chambers’ farm in North Beaver Township.

While in New Castle, Dr. Bush pursued further education at Westminster College, earning a Master of Science degree in Education in 1954. In the same year, he made history as the first Black teacher in the New Castle Public Schools, taking on the role of a Social Studies teacher and guidance counselor at George Washington Junior High School. Committed to advancing his education, he later received a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1968, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from the same institution in 1977.

Dr. Bush’s career was marked by numerous groundbreaking achievements and accolades. He received a Fulbright Award in the 1950s, which enabled him to teach in the Netherlands at Thorbecke Lyceum for one year, and he traveled extensively throughout Europe during his teaching vacations. His professional journey also included a distinguished tenure at the University of Massachusetts–Dartmouth, where he served as a professor and administrator. For his contributions, he was awarded several honors, including the Distinguished Faculty Award from UMass-Dartmouth in 1991 and Professor Emeritus status in 1999.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bush received various recognitions for his impact on education and the community. In addition to being the first Black teacher in New Castle, he was the recipient of fellowships, including a General Electric Foundation Fellowship in Economics (1960) and a Fulbright Fellowship to study and travel in Brazil (1962). He was also acknowledged by the National Association of Black and White Men Together and recognized at institutions such as UMass-Boston and the Tri-State Black History Museum.

Dr. Bush is remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his personal connections. He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. He is survived by sisters Virginia Bush Hall, Marilyn Bush Banks, and Roxanna Bush Woodley, along with numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews/nieces, cousins, and friends. His family expressed gratitude to home care provider Arlene Williams and great nephew Nasir Acy for their dedicated care during his final years.

The loss of Dr. Bush is felt deeply among his community, particularly among friends in the National Association of Black and White Men Together, book club members, and associates from Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Cummings & Davis Funeral Home in Cleveland. The wake will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 1:30 PM, officiated by Pastor Jeffrey Doggett. The service will be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Bush may be directed to the Cleveland Food Bank, honoring his legacy of compassion and community service.
