Cleveland – Authorities are investigating a recent surge in car break-ins that have targeted multiple vehicles in the Tremont and Ohio City neighborhoods. Police have released photos of several individuals who are considered “persons of interest” in connection with these incidents and are urging anyone with information to contact the Cleveland Division of Police at 216-623-5218.

On Tuesday night, more than a dozen vehicles were broken into on West 32nd Street, with additional incidents reported the following night. Concern has grown among local residents following these series of break-ins, prompting Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd to deliver a public safety message that encourages community members to report any break-ins immediately.

Fifteen hours after the initial break-ins, on Friday night, law enforcement apprehended two teenage girls, aged 17 and 13, in a stolen vehicle at approximately 9 p.m. The vehicle had been reported stolen from East Cleveland and was spotted by police before the suspects attempted to flee. Authorities eventually located the stolen car in a parking lot near West 73rd Street and Detroit Avenue, where a chase ensued. During the pursuit, five individuals fled in various directions.

Police successfully captured the two girls. The younger of the two, a 13-year-old missing person from Maple Heights, was among those arrested. Both suspects were processed at a juvenile detention center and charged with receiving stolen property before being released to their caregivers with home detention monitors. They are scheduled to appear in court at a later date, and the stolen car has been recovered by law enforcement.

In addition to the recent arrests, Cleveland police have noted a rise in “smash and grab” incidents, where vehicle windows are damaged during break-ins in Tremont, Ohio City, and University Circle. This pattern is concerning for community members, as many have expressed frustration over the safety of their neighborhoods and the lack of visible police patrols. Residents have reported distress over recurring break-ins and the financial burdens associated with repairing broken windows.

Police Chief Todd acknowledged the complexities involved in tackling such burglaries and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to thoroughly investigate the incidents. However, Cleveland police face challenges in catching suspects due to current policies that limit high-speed chases for vandalism charges. These limitations have raised additional concerns among community members regarding overall public safety.

In response to these challenges, Councilman Kerry McCormack proposed the use of drones for surveillance as a potential solution. This approach aims to enhance safety while avoiding dangerous high-speed pursuits. The police department is currently reviewing video footage from the area and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation into the break-ins.

The recent incidents of car break-ins have prompted urgent discussions about safety within the community. Police actively seek tips and information from local residents to address this issue, as they continue to work diligently to protect the neighborhoods of Tremont and Ohio City from further criminal activity.
