Ohio City is grappling with a surge in car break-ins that have left residents feeling frustrated and unsafe. Broken glass littered across streets has become a common sight, raising significant safety concerns among the community. Police are actively investigating the situation, while residents are demanding increased safety measures.

In recent weeks, local residents have reported a series of car break-ins, particularly on West 32nd Street, where more than a dozen vehicles were targeted over the span of a week. Many residents, like Amanni Herbawi, have expressed a growing unease; Herbawi attested that she feels more secure jogging at night than leaving her car parked on the street. Witnesses recount seeing young people smashing car windows without fear, raising alarm among community members.

Another resident, Holdin Ross, who recently moved from Chicago, experienced a break-in last week. Although nothing was stolen from his vehicle, his belongings were scattered inside, prompting Ross to question the safety of the neighborhood he once considered secure.

Ivana Gregov is among those who have been repeatedly affected, reporting that her car was targeted two times. She has noticed a concerning lack of police presence and has frequently seen shattered windows on her street, leading to increased alarm about the rising number of break-ins.

In response to the alarming trend, Cleveland Police have acknowledged the issue, stating that the problem is “not as simple as a quick fix.” The authorities are encouraging residents to assist ongoing investigations by sharing any surveillance footage they may have from their properties. Additionally, the police have released images of suspected individuals involved in the recent break-ins located in the 2nd District.

On Friday night, law enforcement arrested two girls, aged 17 and 13, in connection with the ongoing series of car break-ins. They were found in a stolen vehicle that had been reported stolen from East Cleveland. The stolen vehicle was tracked by FLOCK cameras as it moved through Ohio City. When police attempted to pull over the vehicle, it fled, and the girls subsequently escaped on foot but were apprehended shortly thereafter. The 13-year-old had previously been reported missing from Maple Heights.

The girls were processed at a juvenile detention center and charged with receiving stolen property. Following their detention, they were released to caregivers and will be monitored with home detention devices, pending a future court appearance. The stolen vehicle has since been successfully recovered by the police.

Furthermore, Cleveland Police have released additional images of “persons of interest” connected to vehicle break-ins in both Tremont and Ohio City. They are urging anyone who may have information relevant to the ongoing investigation to contact the 2nd District Detective Bureau or the Non-Emergency line.

As the community continues to grapple with the impact of these car break-ins, Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd has issued a public safety message, encouraging residents to promptly report any such incidents. The rise in vehicle break-ins has created an atmosphere of unease among Ohio City’s residents, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures.

The increasing frequency of these incidents highlights a pressing need for community vigilance and police action to restore a sense of security in the neighborhood.
