Van Meter, Iowa – A construction worker tragically lost his life following a 30-foot fall on the Van Meter School District campus on Tuesday, October 7. The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. while work was being performed on a new building under construction.

The victim, a 33-year-old male contractor who has not yet been publicly identified, was working at the site when the incident took place. Emergency response efforts were swift, with multiple agencies including the Van Meter Police and Fire departments, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, Dallas County EMS, DeSoto Fire Department, and MercyOne immediately dispatched to the scene.

A school resource officer on site began administering CPR to the injured worker before medical personnel arrived. A MercyOne helicopter was called to the scene, landing on the softball field across from the school, but despite these efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the site.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family members. It was confirmed by a spokesperson for Story Construction that the victim was a bid package contractor involved in the project.
