Cleveland—A deputy U.S. Marshal was shot in the arm during a warrant service on the East side of Cleveland Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred around 8 a.m. at an apartment building located at E. 91st Street and Stewart Avenue in the Glenville neighborhood. The U.S. Marshals, in cooperation with Cleveland police, were executing a warrant for a felonious assault charge when the incident took place.

The suspect, identified as Larry Wiley, is a 49-year-old convicted felon with an extensive criminal history. Wiley has previously served almost 20 years in prison and has multiple documented assaults on law enforcement officers. Before this incident, he was wanted in connection with two separate shootings in East Cleveland that resulted in injuries.

During the warrant service, Wiley barricaded himself inside the apartment and opened fire on law enforcement officers. Officers returned fire in the exchange, but fortunately, no additional injuries were reported. The shot deputy U.S. Marshal was swiftly transported to University Hospitals, where he is currently in serious but stable condition, with expectations for his recovery.

The U.S. Marshal for the area, Pete Elliott, described the injured deputy as a “warrior” and expressed confidence in his determination to survive. The standoff lasted approximately four hours before the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s SWAT team was able to apprehend Wiley. The team used tear gas and engaged in negotiations to bring the situation to a resolution.

Cleveland City Councilmember Mike Polensek voiced concern regarding the rising violence against law enforcement, urging individuals to “put the guns down.” This incident is notable as it marks the first time a deputy from the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force has been shot in the line of duty since the task force was established in 2003. Since its inception, the task force has successfully made over 60,000 arrests.

On the same day as the shooting, discussions around proposed legislative measures took place, including Senate Bill 188. This bill aims to increase penalties for individuals who barricade themselves during arrests, along with those who assist them. The legislative focus reflects ongoing concerns regarding law enforcement safety and strategies to address violent crime.

The pressing issue of escalating violence against law enforcement has prompted further dialogue on how to enhance officer safety, which may encompass potential training initiatives and new legislative measures aimed at curbing violent crime in the Cleveland area and beyond.
