Cleveland – A shooting incident in The Flats at East Bank on Sunday evening has left at least six individuals hospitalized, following chaos that erupted just after the Cleveland Browns season opener. Among the injured is a suspect believed to have been involved in the shooting, according to Cleveland Police reports.

The violence began on W. 10th Street, near Play Bar and Grill, where gunfire caused panic and disorder. Surveillance footage from a nearby business showed people fleeing the scene as shots rang out. Police responded quickly, and the bar was subsequently boarded up.

The six victims of the shooting vary in age and severity of their injuries. The injured include a 21-year-old woman with a gunshot to the foot, a 44-year-old man shot in the knee, a 22-year-old man struck in the thigh, an 18-year-old woman with an abdominal injury, a 16-year-old boy shot in the teeth, and a 21-year-old male suspect suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the abdomen, hand, hip, and thigh.

Police recovered 40 shell casings from the scene, indicating that there may have been multiple shooters involved. This incident further raises concerns about safety in the area, especially as it is reported that more than 300 crimes occurred in the East Bank of The Flats over the past year. This includes at least 20 vehicle thefts and 10 felonious assaults.

Play Bar and Grill, formerly known as Anejo Tequila Joint, has had a troubled history with violence, including a fatal shooting in February 2022. The liquor permit for the bar is held by Giant Step Inc., a company that has accumulated 10 violations since 2019, covering various issues including taxes and improper conduct. The bar’s most recent violation has been in effect since July 2024. City Law Director Mark Griffin noted that the bar has the option to appeal its closure, while mentioning that additional undisclosed citations exist.

In light of the incident, Mayor Justin Bibb reaffirmed the city’s commitment to ensuring public safety. Witnesses described a scene of panic, with some feeling trapped in vehicles while bullets struck nearby. There are concerns that the violence could have been averted with increased police presence in the area, especially after the late-night football game.

Security personnel at the Play Bar and Grill expressed regrets over the situation and indicated that greater law enforcement visibility could have mitigated the risks present during the event. Meanwhile, the law firm representing the bar stated that the shooting was not related to the bar’s operations and criticized the city for poor communication regarding the shutdown, leaving the establishment uncertain about when it might reopen.

An ongoing investigation is underway as Cleveland Police continue to collect evidence and information related to the shooting incident. The broader implications of this event reflect ongoing concerns over safety and security in The Flats, a popular entertainment district.
