Purify’s early education took place in Chattanooga before his family relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1951. He completed his high school education at Glenville High School, graduating on January 20, 1960. He was actively involved in his local church, being a member of Temple Baptist Church on Cedar Avenue under the leadership of Pastor Eugene Ward.
Throughout his life, Charles had a range of interests, particularly in bowling and skating, which brought joy to him and those around him. Beyond his hobbies, he demonstrated his commitment to serving the country by enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served for three years. After his military service, he began a career at the United States Post Office, where he worked for two years before moving on to other opportunities.
On January 25, 1964, Charles married Glenda Motts, and together they had one son, Robert Glenn Purify. The family later moved to Los Angeles, California, where Charles continued his education at Los Angeles State University and worked for Douglas Aircraft for three years. However, in 1971, he decided to return to Cleveland.
Upon returning to Cleveland, Purify continued to make a positive impact through his work at the Tuberculosis Association for over two years. Eventually, he took a position at the Greyhound Bus Station on Chester Avenue. His career path reflected a commitment to serving others and engaging with the community.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Ada Barnett and Dock Barnett. He is survived by his son, Robert Glenn Purify, who lives in Louisville, Kentucky, along with Robert’s mother, Glenda Tims, and a circle of friends and relatives who will remember and honor him fondly.
