Lytle, Texas – A tragic incident at a construction site for a 300-megawatt data center near San Antonio has resulted in the death of a subcontractor. Maurice McGowan, 28, sustained fatal injuries after being struck by an articulating truck on October 13 while performing his duties on the site.

Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene. Despite their efforts, McGowan was pronounced dead upon arrival. In the wake of the incident, all construction work at the site has been suspended pending further investigation.

The data center project, part of Rowan Digital Infrastructure’s Cinco data center campus, broke ground on August 7. It represents a significant investment, with a minimum of $900 million allocated to develop facilities capable of delivering up to 300 megawatts of data center capacity. There is currently no announced completion date for the project.

Turner Construction is serving as the general contractor for the construction of the data center. While McGowan was employed as a subcontractor, the name of the subcontracting firm has yet to be confirmed. Turner Construction reported that their onsite staff and medics responded immediately to the accident.

Local authorities, along with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), are investigating the circumstances surrounding McGowan’s death. Turner Construction has stated their intention to cooperate fully with these investigations in order to determine how the incident occurred and to enhance safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

In statements regarding the incident, Rowan’s chief data center officer highlighted the importance of safety in construction operations and confirmed that support is being offered to employees affected by this unfortunate event. The company remains committed to ensuring a safe work environment for all workers involved in the project.

The ongoing investigation will likely address safety protocols at the construction site and assess compliance with regulations set forth by OSHA and other local authorities. Such inquiries are crucial, especially given the high stakes associated with large-scale infrastructure projects that impact various stakeholders.

The data center sector continues to grow rapidly, with significant investments in projects like this one reflecting the increasing demand for data processing and storage capabilities. However, as construction sites expand, the focus on safety must remain paramount to protect the lives of those working within the industry.

The construction community and local workforce are undoubtedly shaken by this incident, and the emphasis on safety protocols is likely to intensify as investigations unfold. Turner Construction’s proactive approach to the investigation and the support provided to employees may serve as vital components in navigating the aftermath of this tragedy.
