Construction zones are marked for safety, yet dangers persist.
A construction worker, Traymont Tucker, was tragically killed on I-95 in Greenwich when struck by a vehicle in an active construction zone. The driver, Osvaldo Vela, suffered minor injuries, and the state Department of Transportation emphasized the dangers faced by highway workers. Authorities are investigating the incident, urging witnesses to come forward, while discussions on improving safety measures for road construction zones are reignited.
Greenwich – A tragic accident on Interstate 95 in Greenwich has left a construction worker dead early Saturday morning. Traymont Tucker, a 38-year-old resident of Waterbury, was struck by a vehicle at approximately 2:24 a.m. as he was working in an active construction zone.
The accident occurred on I-95 North near exit 3, where construction was actively taking place, resulting in the closure of the left lane of the three available travel lanes. The vehicle involved in the incident was driven by 38-year-old Osvaldo Vela from Yonkers, New York, who veered into the construction area and collided with Tucker.
Emergency medical services in Greenwich pronounced Tucker dead at the scene shortly before 3:00 a.m. in what has been described as a tragic incident for the construction community. The driver, Vela, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Stamford Hospital for treatment.
In the wake of the accident, the state Department of Transportation extended its condolences to Tucker’s family and friends. The Commissioner of the Department emphasized the inherent dangers that highway workers face and reiterated the importance of public compliance with the Slow Down, Move Over law, which is designed to protect construction workers and emergency personnel on roadways.
Following the incident, I-95 North was closed temporarily while authorities conducted an investigation, which is still ongoing. The highway was subsequently reopened just prior to 10 a.m. on the same day. As of early Saturday afternoon, no charges have been filed against the driver, but an appeal for information regarding the crash has been made to the public. Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Troop G at 203-696-2500 or reach out to Trooper George Lyman via email.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding safety measures for construction workers working on highways, prompting renewed discussions about enforcing and enhancing safety protocols to protect those at work on these critical infrastructure projects.
In recent years, the emphasis on road safety for construction zones has increased as similar tragedies have occurred across the nation. The risks involved with highway construction are substantial, requiring not just physical safety measures but also increased awareness and caution from passing drivers. Implementing more stringent compliance with safety laws like the Slow Down, Move Over statute is crucial for reducing such incidents in the future.
The loss of Traymont Tucker serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the daily dangers that construction workers face while performing their essential duties to maintain and improve public infrastructure. As investigations continue, the hope is that this incident will lead to better safety measures that protect those who work tirelessly to build and repair the roads we all rely on.
