Evansville, Indiana – A series of drunk driving incidents over the weekend resulted in multiple arrests, underscoring the dangers of impaired driving in the area.
On Saturday night, 48-year-old Albert Spencer was apprehended after he drove through construction zones on Evansville’s westside. During the incident, Spencer struck several construction cones, with one cone becoming lodged under his truck as he continued to drive. A deputy discovered Spencer on the shoulder of University Parkway south of Upper Mount Vernon Road. Authorities noted signs of intoxication, such as slurred speech and watery eyes, accompanied by a pronounced odor of alcohol.
A breath test revealed Spencer’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was .211, significantly above the legal limit. In addition, Spencer’s driver’s license was expired at the time of his arrest. He now faces several charges, including driving while intoxicated, endangering, driving with a BAC of .15 or higher, and driving while suspended. He is currently held on a $1,000 bond.
In a separate incident, a 25-year-old Evansville man was arrested following a drunk driving crash around 12:03 p.m. on Saturday. This crash occurred in the 900 block of Powell Avenue near South Grand Avenue. The collision left a woman trapped in her vehicle when officers arrived at the scene. Although the driver initially fled on foot, he returned shortly after and exhibited clear signs of impairment, including glossy eyes and slurred speech. Officers discovered several empty beer cans in the suspect’s vehicle, leading to his arrest.
This individual has been booked at Vanderburgh County Jail on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an injury crash. His bond is set at $2,000. The condition of the injured driver remains unknown as it was not reported by the police.
Another arrest involved 51-year-old Howard Lane Jr., who crashed into a dumpster while attempting to leave a bar parking lot. Observing Lane’s erratic behavior in a silver Dodge Charger, officers noted that he was turning his signals on and off while stationary before nearly hitting a nearby fence. As the officers approached, Lane backed into a dumpster instead of moving away. Despite instructions to stop, he attempted to leave the scene but was blocked by a police vehicle.
Signs of intoxication were clear, and Lane later registered a BAC of .159 at the Vanderburgh County Jail. He is charged with driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with an ACE of .15 or more.
Additionally, Evansville police recognized the actions of a “good Samaritan” who intervened to stop another intoxicated driver with an extremely high BAC of .40. This incident took place on Saturday, June 21, at around 3:43 p.m. The driver was reported for erratic behavior, nearly colliding with multiple vehicles. The good Samaritan acted quickly, removing the keys from the ignition before law enforcement arrived. The driver exhibited signs of impairment and was taken into custody, subsequently being hospitalized overnight for life-threatening intoxication. Preliminary charges filed against him include operating while intoxicated with a prior conviction and operating a vehicle without ever having received a license. The driver’s identity has not been disclosed by the police.
This series of incidents highlights the ongoing issues surrounding drunk driving in Evansville and the potential consequences for both drivers and those affected by their actions.
