Nairobi – IBM has appointed Caroline Mukiira as the new General Manager for IBM East Africa, effective October 27, 2025. Mukiira takes over from Nik Nesbitt, who has served in the role for the past seven years and is leaving to explore new opportunities outside of the company. In her new position, Mukiira will be responsible for overseeing IBM’s Sales, Marketing, Services, and Global Delivery Operations in the East African region.

Mukiira holds an impressive track record in the technology sector. Before her recent appointment, she played a pivotal role in leading the IBM TradeLens business across the Middle East and Africa, focusing on transforming and digitizing trade in these regions. Additionally, she served as the Global Business Services Leader for IBM in East Africa, where she managed the daily operations and executed strategic initiatives.

Prior to joining IBM, Mukiira held several leadership roles at Accenture in New York, enhancing her expertise in business solutions and operations. She also worked at Progressive Insurance located in Cleveland, Ohio, and co-founded a local chapter of Standup for Kids, an organization dedicated to supporting homeless youth.

Mukiira’s academic background is notable; she has a Master’s degree in Management and Economics from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Bowling Green State University. Her credentials reflect her deep understanding of both the technical and managerial aspects of running large-scale operations.

Tejas Mehta, the Vice President & General Manager for North, East-West Africa, praised Nesbitt for his significant contributions to IBM’s expansion in East Africa over the past seven years. The transition comes at a time when women in Kenya are making strides in the workforce, as highlighted by a recent IBM Institute for Business Value report. The report revealed that women account for 41% of junior professional and specialist roles in Kenya, surpassing the global average of 40%.

Despite this progress, the report also pointed out the persistent challenges in advancing women into leadership positions, emphasizing the need for structural changes to support women in their career trajectories. Many Kenyan women in entry-level roles express motivation and ambition to advance but cite cultural barriers as significant obstacles to their professional growth.

In response to these issues, the Kenyan government is actively implementing various policies, including the Gender Equality Act, aimed at promoting workplace gender equality and empowering women across different sectors.

In related news, Dashen Bank announced a collaboration with IBM to implement Cloud Pak for Integration on Red Hat Open Shift, which aims to modernize the bank’s cloud architecture. This partnership is designed to enhance Dashen Bank’s digital transformation efforts and improve financial inclusion in Ethiopia. The initiative will allow for more efficient integration of digital services across various platforms, responding to the increasing demand for digital banking solutions in the region.

The appointment of Caroline Mukiira marks a significant moment for IBM and the technology landscape in East Africa, as the region continues to evolve and adapt to the changing global economy.
