Currently, more than 500 employees are already stationed at a temporary facility in Chesterfield as part of the lead-up to the factory’s opening.

The new Lego facility is positioned to be the company’s second manufacturing site in North America, following its existing factory in Monterrey, Mexico. In addition to the Chesterfield factory, Lego also plans to establish a $366 million warehouse and distribution center in Prince George, Virginia, alongside a retail Lego Store at the Short Pump Town Center in Henrico.

According to Lego’s General Manager for Virginia, Jesus Ibañez, the factory’s strategic location will serve to strengthen operational capabilities and efficacy in logistics, all while contributing positively to environmental efforts by minimizing the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods over long distances.

The development project has been made possible through collaborations with Chesterfield Economic Development and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. A performance grant of $56 million from the state’s General Assembly’s Major Employment and Investment Project Approval Commission has also been earmarked for Lego as a part of this venture.

The construction is managed by Gray|Hourigan, a joint venture involving Richmond-based Hourigan and Kentucky-based Gray. The master plan and design for the factory were developed in consultation with Danish companies COWI and Arkitema Architects.

Employees currently working at the temporary packaging facility located at 1600 Ruffin Mill Road will transition to the new factory once construction is finalized. Lego’s extensive commitment to Virginia is anticipated to have lasting repercussions on the local job market and economy, marking a significant investment in the region.
