Additional construction work is planned in the area to improve infrastructure, with future stages of development on College Drive set to commence shortly.
Marshall – Paving delays at the intersection of West College Drive and Saratoga Street are expected to continue into next week, potentially affecting the flow of school traffic as classes resume. With the start of school just days away, authorities are warning that the intersection will not reopen to vehicle traffic by the start of the school year.
R and G Construction crews are currently engaged in paving work at this critical junction and are in communication with Marshall Public Schools about the ongoing changes. A safe path for children to cross the intersection on foot has been planned to ensure student safety as school traffic increases.
The Saratoga intersection was closed last week to allow for concrete paving work, and the company anticipates completing integration of the new intersection with the existing roadway within one to two weeks, subject to weather conditions. Classes at Southview Elementary and Marshall Middle School are set to begin on Wednesday, amplifying the importance of timely project completion.
As part of ensuring safety for students, Erika Coudron from R and G Construction will be present at the intersection to assist children in navigating the area when school begins. Marked paths will be provided, featuring a hard surface to enhance safety for those crossing at the intersection.
The construction project is part of a broader initiative that involves further reconstruction efforts on West College Drive adjacent to the National Guard Armory, encompassing utility line upgrades and the overall roadway reconstruction. Crews are making significant progress with water and sewer pipe installations, which are integral to the project.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation oversees the construction of a roundabout at the three-way intersection near the Armory, with grading work also underway in the area. Concrete paving work is anticipated to advance next week, pending favorable weather conditions.
Looking ahead, a fourth and final stage of construction on College Drive, stretching between Legion Field and Fourth Street, is scheduled to commence in the fall. There will be a brief pause between the end of the current construction phase and the initiation of this fourth phase.
Traffic restrictions will intensify starting Monday, with access across the construction zone at the West College Drive and Saratoga Street intersection completely blocked. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes, as other crossings along Highway 19 remain open. Detours are already in effect on Lyon County Road 7 and Minnesota Highway 23, although some sections are still accessible to local traffic.
Earlier, on July 22, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Marshall Energy Center was held, marking the beginning of a $175 million energy project. This initiative is part of the Missouri Public Utility Alliance’s “Building MO Power” program and aims to enhance the reliability of the electric grid while maintaining affordable energy costs for residents and businesses.
The energy center will feature four natural gas turbines, which will be installed over two phases, with the first expected to be operational by 2026 and the final phase concluding in 2029. Once complete, the facility is projected to generate up to 134 megawatts in winter and 99 megawatts in summer, sufficient to supply three cities the size of Marshall.
This project stands to create jobs, support local infrastructure development, and strengthen community vitality through collaborative efforts.
