Midland Innovation and Technology Charter School to Close

News Summary

The Midland Innovation and Technology Charter School (MITCS) will close after three years due to low enrollment and funding issues. With only 90 students projected for the upcoming fall term against a target of 200, operational costs have become unsustainable. Families are advised to seek alternative schooling options. The closure highlights challenges faced by charter schools nationally, emphasizing the critical nature of student enrollment for financial viability.

Midland – The Midland Innovation and Technology Charter School (MITCS) will close its doors after just three years of operation, effective July 30, 2025. The decision comes as a result of low student enrollment and significant funding challenges that have plagued the school since its inception.

Chief Executive Officer Terrence Smith has indicated that the primary motivations behind the closure are a dwindling student population and the loss of the school’s chief funding source. MITCS opened in September 2022 with the ambition of enrolling a minimum of 200 students; however, as of now, the school reports an enrollment of merely 90 students for the upcoming fall term. With operating expenses surpassing revenues, the financial stability of the school has become untenable, leading to the announcement of its closure.

In response to the impending shutdown, a special public meeting was held on August 5, 2025, which allowed students and families to gather information and voice concerns regarding the transition. Many parents expressed frustration over the late notice of the closure and its potential impact on their children’s educational trajectories. As families of MITCS students scramble to secure alternative educational options, they have been advised to reach out to their local school districts for enrollment assistance.

In an effort to minimize disruption for students, MITCS is currently in the process of sending student transcripts to their respective home school districts. Meanwhile, Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center has expressed readiness to accommodate the expected influx of students transferring from MITCS.

The school had previously attempted to remedy its financial woes through discussions with another charter school about enrolling its students and utilizing MITCS facilities. Unfortunately, these negotiations fell through when the offer was retracted at the last minute, leaving school administrators in a challenging position.

School solicitor Jordan Shuber has conveyed regret over the decision to close, emphasizing the extensive efforts made by the school’s administration to keep the institution operational, which ultimately were not enough to ensure financial viability. The announcement of the closure marks a significant loss for the community, as it leaves many families in a state of uncertainty regarding their educational choices.

MITCS’s closure is emblematic of the struggles facing many charter schools across the country. Founded with the goal of providing innovative educational opportunities, the school faced significant hurdles from the outset, particularly in attracting and retaining students. Lack of sufficient enrollment impacted its funding, ultimately leading to overwhelming operational costs that could not be met. In the charter school model, reliance on a stable stream of student enrollment is crucial for maintaining financial health, and MITCS’s experience highlights how quickly such situations can deteriorate.

As the clock ticks down to the closure date, families affected by the situation will need to urgently consider their educational options for the new term. While the closure poses immediate challenges, local educational institutions are mobilizing to provide support to incoming students from MITCS, aiming to make the transition as smooth as possible in the face of these unexpected changes.
