Derry Township, PA – A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a 61-year-old man who was trapped underground by a large rock at a local mine on Tuesday afternoon. The victim has been identified as James F. Gershman, a resident of White Township in Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. when a 500-pound rock fell and pinned Gershman’s legs while he was working inside a mineshaft at Derry Construction, located on the 320 block of Quarry Road. Emergency personnel responded swiftly, with fire services arriving on the scene around 3:45 p.m.

Derry Township Fire Chief Mark Piantine confirmed that multiple first responders were deployed to the area to assess the situation and provide assistance. Efforts to rescue Gershman were undertaken immediately, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at approximately 5:45 p.m., just over two hours after the rock fell.

The Westmoreland County Coroner, Timothy Carson, reported that Gershman was an employee at the quarry at the time of the accident. The cause and manner of his death will be determined pending the completion of autopsy and toxicology tests.

In light of the event, the Pennsylvania State Police are conducting an investigation to further understand the circumstances surrounding the accident. Initial reports indicated that emergency responders had ordered a medical helicopter to assist, but it was later canceled after the scene was assessed.

Heidelberg Materials, the operator of the quarry, has not yet issued any statements regarding the incident, which has raised concerns among the local community and safety advocates.

The quarry site lies on the western slope of Chestnut Ridge and is visible from nearby Torrance State Hospital, making it a well-known location in the area. This tragedy has reminded many of the inherent risks associated with mining operations, particularly in light of past accidents that have impacted local miners.

As the investigation continues, community members and colleagues of Gershman mourn the sudden loss. Known for his dedication to his work, Gershman’s passing has left a profound void among his family and friends. Preventative measures, safety regulations, and mining operations are now under scrutiny as authorities seek to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future.

Mining safety remains a significant issue, and with Gershman’s death, calls for stricter adherence to safety protocols and better training for workers in hazardous environments will likely grow louder. The hope is that this tragic accident will lead to necessary changes aimed at improving safety conditions for all local miners.

The precautions and procedures in place at mining operations will be evaluated as the investigation unfolds. Community members continue to support one another as they reflect on the life of James F. Gershman and the risks that lurk beneath the surface of their everyday lives.
