Palo Alto – Residents along Middlefield Road in Palo Alto are raising concerns regarding the safety of students at Frank Greene Middle School due to construction vehicles parked in the area. The issue has been brought to light following an incident involving a local welder, Charlie Trexler, who recently lost his job after posting a TikTok video that documented his experiences with parking restrictions imposed by residents.

Trexler’s video depicted him moving a garbage can that had been left in the street for an extended period, which residents had been using to block contractors from parking in front of their homes. In a turn of events, he reported facing job loss as a consequence of his actions and the video posting.

Residents expressed their apprehensions about children’s safety and took their concerns to city officials and the Palo Alto School Unified District in late July. A follow-up email in August referred to Trexler’s video to underline their issues further. The school district, however, stated it could not comment on Trexler’s employment status, as he was not directly employed by them.

In response to the community’s complaints, the Palo Alto School Unified District acknowledged the situation on August 19, confirming that barriers were installed by Swinerton Builders to enhance safety for students commuting to school. After the barricades were placed, locals noted an improvement in visibility when exiting their driveways.

To reinforce regulations, additional signs were placed along Middlefield Road to indicate that construction parking was not allowed for several blocks. However, some construction workers, including those still employed at the site, reported challenges due to instructions from Swinerton to park farther away from the work site. This change resulted in them having to walk about ten minutes to reach their jobs.

One remaining construction worker expressed feelings of disrespect, highlighting that construction personnel are often viewed unfavorably in residential areas, despite their role in creating developments for local residents. Trexler, on the other hand, expressed disappointment over his job loss and indicated he might be hesitant to work in Palo Alto in the future, citing his commitment to professionalism.

While some neighbors voiced dissatisfaction over Trexler’s termination, they clarified that their primary aim was not to jeopardize anyone’s job but to ensure a safe environment for children walking to school. They are advocating for more lasting changes to parking regulations in the area to further promote safety.

At the time of reporting, requests for comments from both Swinerton Builders and Cal Pacific Systems remained unanswered. The evolving situation underscores the tension between neighborhood safety concerns and the practicalities of construction-related parking, highlighting the need for dialogue and solutions that support all parties involved.
