Cleveland Heights, OH – Esther Post, a devoted mother, grandmother, and activist, passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and family. She is survived by her five children: Linda Post of Beachwood, OH, Shelly Izzi of Jessup, MD, Marc Post from Auburn, WA, Alison Shockley of Powell, OH, and Gail Post, who resides in Old Hickory, TN. Esther’s family includes numerous grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Ryder, who will remember her fondly.
Esther was born in Ashtabula, OH, and graduated from Edgehill High School. She went on to study nursing at Mt. Sinai School of Nursing in Cleveland, where she graduated in 1952. Notably, Esther showcased her leadership skills early on when she managed the supply department during a severe storm in 1950.
Throughout her life, Esther was more than just a nurturing mother; she was actively engaged in various social movements and community service initiatives. She met her husband, Harvey J. Post, MD, in the cafeteria of Mt. Sinai Hospital while he was a resident. The couple married on June 19, 1953, the same day as the notorious execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
Together, Esther and Harvey became passionate advocates for peace and equality, engaging in movements such as S.A.N.E. (Committee for the Sane Nuclear Policy), the Civil Rights Movement, and the anti-war movement. Esther was a founding member of the Jewish Secular Community and created one of the earliest women’s Consciousness Raising groups. She joined Temple Tifreth Israel (now Congregation Mishkan Or) in 2010, where she contributed actively to the Seniors Committee.
Esther’s commitment to education and self-improvement was evident in her 30-year participation in art classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art alongside her nursing school classmates. She believed in nourishing not only her mind but also those around her.
As a mother, Esther was often considered the go-to “Mom” for many children in her community. She was known for providing support, comfort, and guidance, whether it was through organizing Girl Scouts, camping trips, or teaching her children how to drive. Her compassion extended beyond her own family and touched many lives in her community.
The Post family stated that Esther would be dearly missed by her classmates from Mt. Sinai Hospital Nursing School and her enduring family, including her sister, Billie Williamson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Harvey, and her sisters: Helen, Shirley, Mary, and Nancy.
Esther’s funeral service is scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, at 1 PM at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel in Cleveland Heights. Following the service, internment will take place at Mayfield Cemetery in Cleveland Heights. Arrangements are being handled by the directors at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Cleveland Museum of Art or Congregation Mishkan Or in memory of Esther Post. Her dedication to justice, equality, and family will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
