Tacoma – Sound Christian Academy has announced it will close its doors effective August 29, just days before the new school year was set to begin on September 3. The closure leaves families scrambling for alternative education arrangements, creating distress among parents and students alike.

The decision to close the academy, formerly known as Tacoma Baptist Schools, comes after a series of financial difficulties that had plagued the institution throughout the year. The school was previously on the verge of closure in March, but a fundraising campaign that raised over $213,000 provided some temporary relief, primarily to pay teachers and cover essential operating costs.

For the upcoming school year, the school had restricted enrollment to Pre-K through 8th grade after an event labeled “back to school night” was held on August 28. However, just a day later, an email was sent to families announcing that the academy could not proceed with its plans for the 2025 school year.

Numerous families had anxiously anticipated the new academic year, with parents like Isaac and Taylar Miller expressing their grief over the closure, particularly as their fourth-grader was poised to embark on a fifth year at the academy. In July, discussions about an “outside group” being involved in refinancing efforts raised hopes for the school’s future, but the anticipated $500,000 refinancing deal ultimately fell through in August, leading to the abrupt decision to shut down.

Former interim head of school Matthew Richey confirmed he was no longer with the institution, leaving inquiries regarding the closure directed to the school board chair. Earlier assurances to families that the school would remain operational were overshadowed by the drastic changes in communication during the days preceding the closure announcement.

In the previous academic year, Sound Christian Academy reported an enrollment of 284 students. However, the current enrollment figures for the impending school year remain unclear. Adding to the challenging circumstances, the academy has faced legal obstacles, with at least two lawsuits filed against it this year. Despite these issues, the Washington State Board of Education approved the academy’s renewal status on June 26, even after being made aware of the financial troubles.

The school board expressed deep regret for the surprise closure and acknowledged the difficulties families are now encountering as they seek new educational options. The board committed to working diligently to refund prepaid tuition and assist both families and staff in transitioning to alternative arrangements.

With the closure now in effect, families such as the Millers are considering homeschooling options or seeking other private school placements. However, with many local private institutions already at capacity, the situation remains troubling for those impacted. As families navigate this unexpected turn of events, the broader implications for the community and the education landscape in Tacoma are still unfolding.
