A motorcade navigates through a picturesque Scottish landscape during Trump's visit.
US President Donald Trump arrives in Scotland for a four-day visit primarily focused on his golf clubs. His trip features strong comments on immigration, calls for European leaders to improve policies, and a schedule including meetings to discuss trade deals. Despite planned protests and a significant security presence, Trump finds limited support from the Scottish public.
Glasgow, Scotland – US President Donald Trump arrived in Scotland on Friday evening for a four-day visit focused on his two golf clubs, which he owns in Aberdeen and Ayrshire. He landed at Glasgow Prestwick Airport shortly before 8:30 PM, where he was welcomed by a crowd of supporters and Scottish Secretary Ian Murray.
During his visit, Trump delivered a stark warning to European leaders regarding immigration, describing the influx of illegal immigrants as an “invasion” that he claims is “killing Europe.” He urged leaders to “get your act together” in addressing the issue. He also stated that, due to the stringent immigration policies implemented during his administration, there were “nobody entering” the United States last month, emphasizing the success of his approach to immigration.
While he acknowledged the efforts of some European leaders in combatting immigration, he did not mention specific names. Trump’s remarks were supported by former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, who echoed his concerns about immigration policies.
Trump’s itinerary includes starting his day at his Turnberry golf club, followed by the opening of a new golf course in Aberdeenshire that he dedicated in honor of his mother. His schedule also features a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday to discuss trade matters, as well as a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday, whom Trump referred to as a “good man.” The discussions are expected to revolve around the potential UK-US trade deal.
His motorcade, which consisted of over two dozen vehicles and was escorted by Police Scotland, passed by a small group of protesters. Protests against Trump’s visit have been organized by the Stop Trump Coalition and are planned in various Scottish cities throughout his stay.
The visit is estimated to cost US taxpayers at least $10 million, making it one of the most expensive golf vacations during Trump’s presidency. Alongside his immigration comments, Trump criticized renewable wind energy initiatives, claiming they are “killing the beauty” of Europe and urged a halt to further wind turbine installations. He described the presence of wind turbines in Scotland as “ruining your beautiful fields and valleys.”
Despite a modest show of support from his arrival crowd, polls indicate that more than 70% of Scots hold an unfavorable opinion of Trump. The security measures for his visit are extensive, representing the largest operation in Scotland since the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Over 5,000 police and security personnel are deployed to safeguard the president during his time in the country.
Trump also mentioned a “good 50/50 chance” of finalizing a trade deal between the US and Europe, which he perceives as potentially the “biggest deal of them all.” After this visit, he is scheduled to return to the UK for a state visit in September.
While this trip is being portrayed primarily as a private visit by US media outlets, the White House has classified it as a “working trip.” The dual nature of the visit highlights the intersection of business interests and political strategies as Trump engages with European leaders during his stay in Scotland.
