The Nevada System of Higher Education Board has approved the $32 million construction of an indoor fieldhouse at the University of Nevada, Reno. Spanning 72,000 square feet, the facility will feature 110 yards of indoor turf for various recreational and athletic activities. The project aims to significantly enhance the student experience and athletic training conditions. Groundbreaking is expected in fall 2025, with completion set for fall 2026. Funding will include a student fee and philanthropic support, with a seating capacity increase from 300 to 1,500 for community events.
Reno, Nevada – The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents has granted final approval for the construction of a $32 million indoor fieldhouse at the University of Nevada, Reno. The project was officially approved on June 13, 2025, with groundbreaking expected to begin in fall 2025 and the anticipated completion date set for fall 2026.
The new facility will cover an impressive 72,000 square feet and is strategically located adjacent to the southeast entrance of Mackay Stadium. Designed to accommodate a variety of purposes, the indoor fieldhouse will feature 110 yards of indoor turf, which will cater to recreation, club sports, and intramural activities, thereby enhancing wellness and activity levels within the campus community.
Beyond serving the general student body, the fieldhouse is envisioned as a vital practice space for the Wolf Pack Marching Band, Nevada spirit teams, the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), as well as hosting ASUN (Associated Students of the University of Nevada) and community events, youth sports activities, and pregame functions.
In a statement regarding the initiative, the University President highlighted the project’s significance in improving the overall student experience and promoting health, wellness, and connections among the campus community. The facility is expected to support all 17 Nevada sports programs by providing designated training spaces for teams such as football and women’s soccer.
The Director of Athletics has noted the indoor fieldhouse will be instrumental in ensuring the long-term success and championship potential of the university’s athletics programs. It will significantly improve training conditions for Wolf Pack teams, especially given Northern Nevada’s unique climate challenges, which include harsh winters and extremely hot summers.
The financing for this ambitious project will come from a combination of sources. This includes a $3.50 per-credit student fee that has been approved by the Board of Regents, projected to generate approximately $76.9 million by 2056. Additionally, Nevada Athletics aims to raise between $5 million and $7 million through philanthropic support specifically designated for the Fieldhouse & Turf Fields Project. The total projected cost stands at $32 million, which also encompasses enhancements to the playing surfaces at Wolf Pack Park and improvements for the John Sala Intramural Field.
Originally, the seating capacity for the fieldhouse was estimated at 300 people; however, this has now been increased to 1,500 to accommodate larger events such as fundraisers, tailgate parties, and concerts. Further developments will include the installation of new scoreboards, a prominently displayed backlit Nevada sports wolf logo, and an advanced HVAC system for climate control.
This new facility comes following previous unsuccessful attempts to secure funding for an indoor training space over the years, with project estimates fluctuating between $7 million and $70 million. The approval of the current project represents a significant step forward for the university and its athletic programs, ensuring improved infrastructure for both students and athletes alike.
